What It Looks Like When Someone Is Actually Present

Think about a time when someone who loved you said, "Wait — have you really thought this through?"

Today's Scripture: "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." — Ephesians 5:25

Reflection: Numbers 30 paints a picture that's easy to misread. On the surface, it looks like a set of ancient rules about who has authority over whom. But underneath, it's a portrait of what love in action actually looks like: someone who is present, paying attention, and willing to step in — not to control, but to protect.

Imagine a father who notices when his daughter is about to make a promise she can't keep and quietly says, "Let's think about that." Or a husband who is engaged enough in his family's life that he knows what's being committed to — and cares enough to ask questions. Or a friend in a small group who has known you long enough to say, "That doesn't sound like you. Are you sure about that?"

That kind of presence is rare. And when you've experienced it, you know how powerful it is.

This is exactly what Jesus does for us. He is not a distant, disengaged savior. He is the shepherd who is close enough to know when we're wandering, present enough to call us back, and loving enough to lay down his own comfort — his own life — for our flourishing. His authority over us is never wielded for his benefit. It's always exercised for ours.

That's the model. That's what it looks like when someone truly loves you.
