Your Word is Your Bond - And God Takes It Seriously

Have you ever made a promise you quietly let slip away, hoping no one noticed?

Today's Scripture: "If a man vows a vow to the Lord or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth." — Numbers 30:2

Reflection: Words are everywhere — texts, emails, social media, small talk — and somewhere along the way, they've gotten cheap. We say "I'll pray for you" and forget before we reach the car. We commit to things we never intend to follow through on. We soften, exaggerate, and hedge.

But God has a different standard. Numbers 30 opens with a simple, sobering principle: when you make a vow, keep it. Your word is not just a sound that leaves your mouth — it's a commitment that carries real spiritual weight.

This isn't just an ancient rule for ancient people. Jesus echoes it in the Sermon on the Mount when he says, "Let what you say be simply yes or no. Anything more than this comes from evil" (Matthew 5:37). The reason we have courtroom oaths and pinky promises and "I swear on my life" is because — if we're honest — people lie. A lot. And we're not always honest about our own dishonest hearts.

Here's the good news tucked inside this challenging truth: God himself is a vow-keeper. Every promise he has made, he has kept. Every word he has spoken, he has honored. And because we are made in his image, we have the capacity — through his Spirit — to become people whose word actually means something.

Today's Application: Think of one commitment you've let quietly lapse — to God, a family member, or a friend. Name it honestly today, and take one small step toward following through.
