The Danger of Doing Really, Really Well

Yesterday we looked at how our blessings are meant to fuel the mission. But today, let's be honest about something: when life is good, staying put feels completely reasonable.

Today's Scripture: "Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven." — Matthew 19:23

Reflection:

Jesus's words about wealth can feel easy to dismiss. That's about really rich people, we think. That's not me.

But Reuben and Gad weren't billionaires. They were farmers and shepherds who had done well. They had enough — and that "enough" was the problem. Not because having enough is wrong, but because enough has a way of making us stop looking forward.

This is the razor-thin line between contentment and complacency. Contentment says, I'm at peace with where God has me. Complacency says, I'm comfortable here and I don't want to be disturbed.From the outside, they look almost identical. But one keeps you moving; the other slowly drains the life from your faith.

Most of us aren't trying to be complacent. We're just genuinely happy that things are the way they are. And in that happiness, we can quietly forget: there's more to come. There are people around us who haven't crossed the river yet. There are parts of our own faith that still need to grow.

The danger isn't abundance. The danger is letting abundance convince us we've already arrived.

Today's Application: Ask yourself honestly: In what area of my life have I stopped pressing forward because I'm comfortable enough? Sit with that question today without rushing to answer it.
