God's Boundaries Are Your Address, Not Your Cage

What if everything you thought you knew about God's rules was slightly off?

Today's Scripture: "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome." — 1 John 5:3

Reflection:

Most of us grew up with some version of God as the cosmic rule-enforcer — clipboard in hand, waiting at the edge of the property to catch us stepping out of line. It's an image that makes obedience feel like a grind and grace feel like a narrow escape.

But this past Sunday, we looked at a passage that reframes everything: Numbers 34, where God lays out the borders of the Promised Land for Israel. At first glance, it reads like a surveyor's report — north side here, south side there, the sea on the west. Dry stuff. Easy to skim.

But slow down and something remarkable emerges. God isn't drawing these lines to limit his people. He's drawing them to give his people a home. These were former slaves. They had no address, no place to belong, no land to call their own. The borders weren't a cage — they were a gift. This is where you live. This is where you belong. Now go flourish.

The same is true for us. God's commands aren't a list of restrictions designed to make life smaller. They're the shape of a life that actually works — boundaries that protect us, orient us, and give us room to grow.

Today's Application: Pick one of God's commands that has always felt more like a burden than a gift. Ask yourself honestly: What might God be protecting me from — or preparing me for — with this boundary?

A Closing Thought: You were not made for slave quarters. You were made for a home. Today, let God's design feel less like a fence and more like an address.
